If This Is The Future Of The Internet, I'm Pulling The Plug

I haven't blogged for a while, but some new developments that came to my attention pried me out of the blogging apathy that's gotten hold of me because I felt a serious need to get the word out there.

A friend of mine was freaking out over the IM because she just caught her teenaged daughter on both the chatroulette and Omegle sites, which are apparently the newest trends to sweep the internet. The premise of chatroulette is that you can cam and chat with random strangers matched up for you by the site, and if you're not feeling some chemistry, you can click on to the next random profile. Naively, I asked her what was wrong with that--the premise seemed harmless enough. She dared me to check them both out.

So check them out I did, first logging on to chatroulette (with my cam not enabled--wasn't going to put myself out there just on a whim), where within 10 seconds I realized why she was freaking out.

Perverts. A whole lot of them. A whole lot of bird flipping, cyber soliciting, a whole slew of horny college boys asking you if you're a female and would you turn your camera on and raise your blouse so they can check your boobs out. Disturbingly, kids on cam, making me wonder where the hell their parents are considering the plethora of perverts I encountered there. Close ups of the male organ being worked to a frenzy, making me wish whoever those idiots were on the other end of cyberspace would pull a nerve and do themselves a major injury. I lasted all of 10 minutes.

Omegle wasn't much better, although this one had no webcam involved, just random chatting with strangers whose age or gender remain unknown unless it was volunteered. A lot of kids on that site. A LOT of kids. A lot of perverts as well, and boy, did I have fun with THOSE. My foray into the Omegle world went thus:

You are now chatting with a random stranger. Start typing!
Stranger: Hi
Me: Hi
Stranger: asl?
Me: Female, somewhere in Asia. You?
Stranger: Milano, male.
Me: Oh, that's lovely, Italy's wonderful.
Stranger: Can I ask you a question?
Me: Shoot.
Stranger: Would you like to see Italian c**k?
Me: No thanks, I bet I've seen better salami. *Disconnect*

You are now chatting with a random stranger. Start typing!
Stranger: Hey!
Me: Hey!
Stranger: I've got a big d***!
Me: I bet mine's bigger than yours!
Stranger: WTF??? *Disconnect*

You are now chatting with a random stranger. Start typing!
Stranger: I'm a girl with big boobs and I want to talk dirty!
Me: Honey, I'm gay. Bet they're implants, too.
Stranger: *Disconnect*

But there were some connections that were actually worthwhile. The young Korean college student who wanted to be a policeman and needed someone to practice his English with, and was so profoundly grateful for the impromptu English lessons I gave him that it touched me. A 17 year old new mother who needed a break from breastfeeding, and was feeling depressed and disconnected from her friends. A 19 year old young man who was so impressed with the fact that I knew who Yngwie Malmsteen was that he dropped his guard and took me to his metal band's FB page, pronouncing me "major cool" for a 41 year old matron.

On the whole though, I have a beef with these sites, simply for the fact that they are SO unregulated it's only a matter of time before some pedophile pretending to be 17 catches a 14 year old unawares (and yes, some admit to being actually younger than 14--I'm just hoping they're all undercover cops patrolling the site, though that's too much to wish for), if it hasn't happened already.

So this is really me sounding the alarm to parents out there, and to those who have young, computer savvy relatives.

As if we needed any more reasons to be vigilant over the web.

Yep ... there are lots of reasons to be sitting in a co-pilot chair as our kids navigate the internet to do the necessary bits for homework and the fun stuff too.

Sometimes even searches for homework information bring up web sites that are embarrassing to both but can lead to some conversations that can be instructive.

One can't stop websites multiplying...It's parents that have to guide their kids to more valuable occupations than senseless, time wasting random chatting..."Idleness is the best friend of the devil", we say...Hope I didn't sound as a preaching teacher....

Tell me about it. My eldest is needing the computer more and more, so every time he uses it, I'm sitting on the couch right beside it. Nonetheless, even at Wikipedia, he finds links that are age inappropriate.

It's been awhile girl, I hope your doing well.

Parents go to great lengths to protect their children from physical harm and exploitation, pornography and unacceptable literature. I'm always amazed that they have such a relaxed attitude to their children's computer use.

I'm glad your friend is such a prudent parent.
I'm doing great, Cat.

That's the thing I don't get about parents. Take my son's PSP (Playstation) unit, for example. When we bought it for him my husband and I decided not to have it unlocked because we didn't want him to be able to download just any game online. The seller told us we'd be losing money because we'd be paying for games that can be downloaded for free. We stood our ground. Our principle was, we'd rather pay for games as long as we can control and supervise the content my son is getting, instead of giving him untrammeled access online to games which were inappropriate. Which is exactly what's happening to his classmate. 11 year olds playing games rated M (for Mature Audiences only), with all the violence they entail. Thanks, but no thanks.

(Of course, son has been raising a ruckus over the fact that his classmates can access ANY game on their PSPs and he's the only one who can't, proving once more just how lackadaisical parenting has become these days)

I read an article about chatroulette the other day, but didn't bother looking.

The old warning, "Don't talk to strangers" is as true as it ever was, if not more so. Parents have to realise that this doesn't just apply to the street. The street is now inside the home.
So very true.

I looked up what the netizens have been saying about chatroulette and similar sites, and was struck by what one woman said in an online article:

"Going into these sites is like practically inviting a pedophile into your home."

Bloody terrifying.

Mariya, we need more preaching teachers like you. A lot of parents aren't getting the message either. Parenting isn't something you can ever take a break from especially during the crucial years.

Welcome back....

And it's not the internet that's the problem--it's the way it's being used and the lack of monitoring by parents.

Seems many parents are not being parents.... When I read about teachers having to phone students to make sure they make it to exams...I shake my head...

Why the heck are people having children if they don't want to do the job of raising them????? All I can say is that I'm glad I'll soon be leaving teaching--tired of being a parent as well...that's not what I signed up for.

If you aren't prepared to raise your children and make them face consequences, then do us all a favour: use birth control.

Yup...guess who is tired and fed up? and it's only February...how many more months 'til summer???

And I think I just ranted in your welcome back blog....jeesh...

Hope you had a wonderful Chinese New Year's complete with exploding chocolate tigers (just to fit Valentine's day in there as well...)

Wishing you happiness

Misty

I wish all parents were on the same page too, Misty. Sadly, we aren't, and therein lies the trouble. I can understand how frustrated you must feel that some people delegated their child-rearing responsibilities to you, and worse still, when called upon to address problems their children are having, are actually in denial! That gets me so mad, because I've never been one to view my children with rose-colored glasses--that is an attitude that will do them more damage in the long run, in my opinion.

Gee, this ranting stuff feels goooooooooood.

Happy Chinese Valentine New Year to you, too!!!

Hi, Flib. The computer's become the surrogate nanny now after the TV used to be for some parents. It's a way to keep kids preoccupied and out of the way. Right now my kids can only use the computer for school activities and to log into pre-approved websites (Google Earth for the eldest, the Lego and Nickelodeon websites for the youngest). And the computer's in a public area where we can always check out what they're looking at.

I love it that even now, my boys still beg me to take them to bookstores.

Oh, I bet you'd have a LOT of fun zinging perverts in those sites, Jen. I actually went back to Omegle earlier and just kept randomly quoting from "The Producers." Sadly, nobody seemed to know the phrase "Well-hung stableboy." They all disconnected on me.

I still can't wrap my mind around the fact that it was a kid that developed it. What the heck will they think of next??

Hello Anna; good to see you do some fingertip-fluttering here again. Yes, I couldn't but agree with your sentiments and with those who've responded. I just looked at Chatroulette site - pretty nasty, a bunch of young fellas gaily waving their appendages. Misty's comments about parents and their sense of responsibility is one I often rant on about. It seems they're too ready to abdicate from responsibility rather than merely delegate. Yeah, raise 'em yourselves or don't have 'em! (I know there are financial difficulties in many families but the willingness to presume the state and the schools should take responsibility is grossly overdone, in my humble opinion.)

I hope you and yours are well and thriving.

I'm shocked to learn about what young people are behaving on those sites. I think parents, teachers, and the entire society should work together to divert the attention of those teenagers to something that is healthy.

Their obsession in seeking such excitement online might reveal that they have, more or less, not been given enough attention from either their parents or their school.

Biiiggg hugs for having you back!

Hey, John! I know this is very unPC, but what the heck, I'll say it anyway: some people deserve to be sterilized. Seriously. They just don't deserve to be parents. What makes it worse is the fact that children never ask to be born--it's basically a unilateral decision on the part of the parent/s, so it's incumbent on parents to make sure they do their job right.

I'm doing great, hope you are, too. It's good to see you and the usual crowd in here.

I'm thinking that perhaps parents aren't so much apathetic as unaware of this new online trend as yet, Agnes. Plus, let's face it, a lot of teenagers are more tech and internet savvy than their parents can be, and they latch onto trends much more readily. Constant communication with your kids is always the key.

Biiiig hugs back!

Yikes this makes me very glad that my daughters made it safely to adulthood and brought back a bad memory of when my oldest daughter was just 14 or 15 years old and how some 26 year old perv had found her on myspace and almost talked her into meeting him and running away to a far-away state she thought she was in love with a man she had never even met But my ex-wife was a snoop and kept track of what the girls were doing on-line And we had to put a stop to it and take away her computer privileges for a while She did thank us for stopping it many years later.

I hope they shut those sites down as I can see how the "bad people" could use it to trick many children into child slavery or worse

Today is the youngest you will ever be. Live like it !

Oh, wow--am I glad your daughter didn't meet with a fate worse than getting grounded, considering just how many nasty people are out there on the net.

A good online friend of mine who earned his wisdom from hindsight had this to say to me about the lesson he learned after finding out his son was doing drugs--"Privacy is NOT a right afforded to children in your household. As a parent, keep track of everything they do." He said his son constantly locked himself in his room as a teenager, and as a "modern" father, he thought his son deserved his privacy. Too late did he learn that his son wanting to be alone was due to him doing drugs in his room. So as parents, we need to be always on top of everything happening to our children, which means communication, communication, communication, and yes--snooping--when necessary.

    Hiya miss Munchkin

    Yikes
Like Tex8can I'm glad that my kids are grown up now
And wisely educated to know whats what!

As I fix computers for a living, I'm surprised on occasions that many parents dont even know what theyre kids are upto online or dont even know how to check the history.

With kids being kids and having friends over etc....
I reckon its best to keep their pc in the living room where a parent can keep an eye on them and educate them to the pitfalls in the jungleout there.

Hiya DZ, yep, we keep our computer in a public area of the house so we can keep track of how the kids are using it. They're also not allowed to use it without our permission. You can't be too careful, and with the internet as unregulated as it is, letting your kids loose to use the computer without supervision is just asking for trouble.

Thanks so much--warning's been retracted now except for Russia and Japan from what I hear. But then I also just read that huge waves were spotted off some coastal towns in Mindanao, our southernmost area, so am still checking updates.

Welcome back Ana

Agree with Misty, quote: it's not the internet that's the problem--it's the way it's being used and the lack of monitoring by parents.

Seems many parents are not being parents.... When I read about teachers having to phone students to make sure they make it to exams...I shake my head...

Why the heck are people having children if they don't want to do the job of raising them????? unquote

To be a parent requires dedication, patience, and discipline ... supervising and teaching your children right from wrong. If there are underaged children on sites as such, the parents are not doing their job.

On another note, I did like your 'chats' recall Ana, especially the Italian, lol

Have a lovely week dear, and do join us more often

Hi Renee--I always did maintain that children never ask to be born, so it's incumbent on us parents to make sure we're there for them when they need us most. And part of it is imposing reasonable limitations on children and giving them guidance. To not do this is downright negligent.

That Italian will probably never look at a salami the same way again. Have a great week too!

Hi Edel, thanks for dropping by! I so totally agree with you because my computer is right where everyone can see it, too, plus I always check my sons' computer use history.

I also pronounce you as being "major cool"!

I agree. There are too many weirdos out there in the world, and now days the internet is too readily available. I can imagine that it must be a challenge for parents to try and regulate their child's internet usage at home, but then all they have to do is visit a friends place, internet cafe etc; It is indeed very scary as a upcoming parent that there are people out there in the world like this, but I think most of the onus would have to fall on the parents to educate their children and what/how to avoid these individuals.

Note the above 'upcoming parent' comment. I am going to be a Dad!

The internet is full of garbage. Unfortunately I highly doubt that will ever change. However I have heard that Companies are starting to hold their employee's accountable for what they choose to post in online forum's (i.e. FB etc which has its draw backs, but in the case of these delinquents it could have some advantages.

I think a lot of it can be avoided with parents educating their children from a young age to stay off these type of sites. You can only block them with parental controls at home, but they can still go on the sites on other computers. I believe if they are educated early it will be more en-grained in them and changes are better they will avoid these types of sites.

Hope all is well with you

Hi there Munchkin! Thanks a million for the information provided with a very interesting and humouristic twist as always! I won't look totally ignorant if ever someone comes up with the names of those websites.

Still smiling. Good post.
